Vernon & District Métis Association
History
VDMA began in 1996 founded by Bob Trumbley and Glenda DeJong. While Métis people have been migrating west since the 17th century, in modern times there was an increased demand for representation for Métis people both in terms of advocacy and cultural sustenance. Several other prime figures in the history of VDMA include Agda Newman, Marlene Beattie, Susan Wells, William Gagne, Don McBeth, Vince VanWieringen, and Linda VanWieringen. In 2006, VDMA signed a Community Governance Charter Agreement with MNBC. While MNBC represents VDMA at the provincial level, VMDA works at the community level to provide the Métis in the Vernon district area with both a sense of belonging through community and a platform from which to practice the Métis culture together.
